I place online orders all the time. In fact, I sometimes feel a little empty inside when I’m not anticipating anything in the mail that day. So when a package appeared at my doorstep, I didn’t think twice before opening it, even if my name wasn’t anywhere on it.
Now, I’m not a superstitious type. I like to think of myself as a very grounded and realistic person. But when I opened that package and saw a Ouija board – well, I almost felt my heart leave my body.
It’s just a plaything, right? I mean, when Toys R’ Us was still around, a retailer specializing in toys and other kid-oriented products for those of you too young to know or remember, you could find one on their shelves.
“You put that back where you found it!” I remembered my mom screaming at me when I used to pick it up out of curiosity.
There’s a million and one stories online about how dangerous these things can be but I never payed too much attention to them. After all, it’s just a silly game to play with your friends at sleepovers or something someone would bring out at a Halloween party to scare their guests.
But I wish I never opened that package. As I lay on the floor, bleeding out from the giant hole in my chest, the demon tied to the board dangled my heart over me, smiling, mocking me. I never had to play with the board. I was dead the moment I opened the package.
